GSTR-9 Annual Return Filing Guide for India

What is GSTR-9?

GSTR-9 is the consolidated annual return that summarises all outward and inward supplies, tax paid, Input Tax Credit claimed, and refunds/demands for a full financial year, reconciling the twelve months of GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings into a single yearly statement. It gives the tax department (and the taxpayer) a comprehensive year-end picture of GST compliance.

Who must file GSTR-9?

Regular taxpayers registered under GST are generally required to file GSTR-9. Taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover up to a government-notified threshold (periodically revised, historically ₹2 crore) have had the filing made optional in various years, so always check the current year's notification. Composition scheme taxpayers file GSTR-9A instead, and e-commerce operators file GSTR-9B where applicable.

GSTR-9 due date

GSTR-9 is due by December 31 following the end of the relevant financial year (for example, the FY 2024-25 annual return is due December 31, 2025). Track this and other filing deadlines live on the GSTFlix homepage.

GSTR-9CTaxpayers above a higher turnover threshold (historically ₹5 crore) must additionally file GSTR-9C, a self-certified reconciliation statement between the annual return and audited financial statements.

Key sections of GSTR-9

The return is organised into six parts: basic registration details, details of outward and inward supplies declared during the year, ITC availed and reversed, tax paid, particulars of transactions for the previous financial year declared in the current year's returns, and other information such as refunds, demands, and HSN-wise summary of supplies.

Common reconciliation challenges

The most frequent difficulty in GSTR-9 preparation is reconciling figures across GSTR-1 (sales declared), GSTR-3B (tax paid and ITC claimed), and the taxpayer's own books of account, since amendments, credit notes, and late entries in one return often don't automatically reflect in another. A careful month-by-month reconciliation before attempting the annual return saves significant rework. Use the Annual GST Summary Builder on GSTFlix to visualise your monthly GST liability trend before filing.

Penalty for late filing

Late filing of GSTR-9 attracts a late fee (historically ₹200/day, split ₹100 CGST + ₹100 SGST, subject to a turnover-linked cap), in addition to which the taxpayer risks scrutiny notices for non-filing. Estimate exposure with the GST Penalty Calculator.

Tips for smoother GSTR-9 filing

  1. Reconcile GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, and your books monthly rather than waiting until year-end.
  2. Match ITC claimed in GSTR-3B against GSTR-2B for the full financial year before finalising.
  3. Keep a running log of credit notes, debit notes, and amendments as they happen.
  4. Review HSN-wise summary requirements early since they require granular data most businesses don't track by default.
  5. Engage a Chartered Accountant for GSTR-9C if your turnover crosses the audit threshold.
